California's unemployment rate fell to a new record low of 3.9 percent in October.

The California Employment Development Department says the state added 23,600 nonfarm payroll jobs during the month.

The previous record low was 4 percent set in September.

The department says October's gains extend California's record jobs expansion to 116 months.

The unemployment rate in San Luis Obispo County last month was 2.4 percent, the same as in September. It's below the October 2018 unemployment rate of 2.8 percent.

Santa Barbara County's unemployment rate rose slightly in October to 3.0 percent from 2.8 percent in September. It was 3.3 percent in October 2018.
