Construction projects will force the temporary closure of rest areas on major highways traveling along the Central Coast throughout 2021.

On Highway 101, there are planned projects at the Gaviota Safety Roadside Rest Area in Santa Barbara County and the Camp Roberts Safety Roadside Rest Area in Monterey County.

Construction at the Gaviota Rest Area is expected to last from March to November of 2021. Improvements will be made the rest areas' sewage system. A new maintenance storage area and crew room will also be built. Both the northbound and southbound rest areas will be closed.

Similar improvements will be made at the Camp Roberts Rest Area. Northbound and southbound rest areas are expected to be closed from May 2021 to March 2022.

On Highway 46, the Shandon Rest Area is also undergoing construction and will be closed starting Tuesday, Feb. 16 until the summer.
