The City of Lompoc is receiving dozens of applications from people in hopes of opening up their own recreational marijuana shops.
Officials say 31 applications have been received by the City with 18 approved. Three of the approved sites are currently open, including Elevate Lompoc, Ocean Hye Club and Leaf Dispensary. While Leaf Dispensary opened in January, the other two opened their doors in May and June of 2019.
Cannabis business owners say they encourage the competition because all of the stores provide something different for customers and help revitalize Old Town Lompoc.
“Just like there are many different kinds of clothing stores, there are many kinds of cannabis retail stores. So, I think there is plenty of room for all of us,” said Kristine Bates, general manager of Elevate cannabis dispensary.
Meanwhile, other residents are concerned that the dispensaries will create a negative influence on Lompoc and cause problems such as drivers being under the influence more often.
“They are very, very concerned and seem to be frustrated, and can’t do anything about it. They have young children running around and they are concerned about people getting high,” said Howard Chapman of Lompoc.
An estimated 15 more storefronts are expected to set up shop in the near future.
