Health officials in San Luis Obispo County are reminding people to take “common-sense precautions” this flu season.

While flu season is well underway, officials say they don’t believe the local flu season has peaked quite yet.

Beginning in October or November, the flu season usually peaks sometime between January and February, lasting, sometimes, until May, officials said in a press release.

By mid-November, San Luis Obispo County had five confirmed cases.

Those most at risk to suffer from serious complications related to the flu include adults over the age of 65, children under the age of 5 and especially under the age of 2, pregnant women and people with other health conditions.

“It's important for people at risk of serious complications—and the people who spend time with them—to protect themselves from the flu. It's also important to remember that even young, healthy people can sometimes experience serious complications,” officials said in a press release.

Those who believe they have the flu are advised to stay home and limit their exposure to others.

Health officials are advising everyone to get a flu shot, even those who have already had the flu, as they say the vaccine helps protect against three or four different strains of the virus.
