While road crews continue to assess the damage to Highway 1 at Rat Creek in the Big Sur area, Caltrans is modifying the highway's closure boundaries.

Initially closed last Tuesday from Ragged Point in the south to Fullers Point in the north, the southern closure is being moved up to Willow Creek Road and the northern closure is being moved down to South Coast Center.

During last week's rainstorms, a debris flow washed out a section of the highway near Rat Creek, leaving a 150-foot chasm in the roadway. The area is below the Dolan Fire burn scar.

That wasn't the only place along the highway that suffered damage. Approximately 60 locations north and south of Rat Creek were affected by debris flows, slides, and flooding. Caltrans says road crews have been working from the north and the south to clear and repair drainage systems and stabilize damaged sections of the road.

Officials say the closure boundaries will be moved as those crews make progress, but there is no estimated timeframe for when the highway will be opened completely.
