A Santa Barbara-based company is now distributing its longer-lasting avocados to hundreds of stores across the country.

Apeel Sciences has developed a way to slow the rate of water loss and oxidation in produce by adding a layer of protection to the fruit's peel.

Apeel says its edible, plant-derived coatings slow the rate of spoilage, and its avocados have double to triple the shelf life of other avocados.

The company is now working with Kroger to provide its special avocados to more than 1,100 stores across the U.S.

Kroger will also test out sales of Apeel asparagus and Apeel limes in its Cincinnati market this fall.

Apeel was founded in 2012 with a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help reduce food loss in developing countries.
