SLO Street Medics, a team of local volunteers trained in first-aid response, is raising money for the cremation of an unhoused community member who died Sunday in San Luis Obispo.

According to local law enforcement, the death of the man was reported Sunday morning at Mitchell Park.

No additional information about the man is known at this time, but police say he was in his 60s.

A SLO Street Medics volunteer said the organization hopes to raise $1,500 for the man's cremation.

Chad Lamb, a homeless community member who took care of the decedent, said he was sweet, yet persevering.

"Big, bushy, red beard, sweetest man you'll ever meet," Lamb said, describing the man. "Determined, fierce, grouchy and grumpy just like old men, but that man had a heart of gold."

San Luis Obispo police officers and San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office are investigating the cause of the man's death.

Community members who want to donate to the effort can send money via Venmo to @slostreetmedics.
