UPDATE (4:24 p.m.) - Santa Barbara police say officers are in contact with the person with a knife near the Santa Barbara police station. People are asked to stay away from the area.

ORIGINAL STORY: Residents in a portion of Santa Barbara were told to shelter in place Wednesday afternoon.

Santa Barbara police issued the advisory at around 4 p.m. and said it was due to a person with a knife who was last seen near police department on the 200 block of E. Figueroa St.

People are being advised to shelter in place until further notice.
