UPDATE: Pedestrian hit, killed while crossing freeway

UPDATE (12:08 p.m.) - Santa Barbara CHP officers say a female pedestrian was hit and killed by a car while she was crossing the southbound lanes of Hwy 101 in Santa Barbara.

The crash happened just before midnight in the far-right lane of Hwy 101 south of Castillo St.

Officials say the driver of a 2001 Buick was heading southbound when he struck the pedestrian as she crossed in front of his car. The driver, identified as Isaac Josheph Vargas, 31, of Santa Barbara, pulled over, called 911 and waited for first responders to arrive.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead by a paramedic at 12:05 a.m..

The cause of the crash is under investigation, though officials say alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors.

ORIGINAL STORY:
A pedestrian in Santa Barbara was struck and killed late Monday night on Highway 101.

After the accident was first reported at about 11:59 p.m., Santa Barbara Police closed down the southbound lanes of Hwy 101 from Las Positas Rd. to Castillo St.

As of 2:26 a.m., all but one lane of the highway had reopened. The continuing closure was due to ongoing construction.
