Renovation work will close the Paul Nelson Aquatic Center in Santa Maria for the coming months.

The City announced Thursday that "a renovation is needed to continue meeting the growing needs of the community."

An estimated 75,000 people use the center each year and while the Olympic-size pool has been patched multiple times over the years, the City says a full resurfacing project has not taken place there since 1997.

The pool will be closed beginning Saturday, Jan. 11 and is expected to remain closed until April 1.

During that time, crews will be working to reconstruct the plaster surface of the pool, replace parts of the pool deck and update the pool to industry standards.

The City says $779,055 in Community Development Block Grant funds will be used for the project.

The Paul Nelson Aquatic Center is located at 600 South McClelland St.
