A different kind of event replaced a decades-old Memorial Day Ceremony in Los Osos.

For more than 40 years, hundreds of people gather at the Los Osos Valley Funeral Cremations & Memorial Park for a service that includes the San Luis Obispo County Band, guest speakers, a parade of flags brought in by military and local boy scout troops and more.

But due to COVID-19, this year's ceremony was canceled.

Instead, people were invited to decorate their cars and drive through the cemetery to pick up a sack lunch, including a hot dog, chips and soda, served by members of the Bay Osos Kiwanis.

Planes from the Estrella Warbirds Museum in Paso Robles also flew over the cemetery.

The memorial park planned to post a Memorial Day video to its Facebook page Monday afternoon.
