The Five Cities Fire Authority has safety tips for people planning to use Safe and Sane fireworks over the Fourth of July weekend. Fire Authority units will be on patrol during the evening of July 4.

The purchase of fireworks by anyone under the age of 18 is illegal. Fireworks may be used under adult supervision only.

Safe and Sane fireworks are available for sale in Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and the Oceano Community Services District through July 5.

The discharge of fireworks is allowed in Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach only on July 4.

Possession or discharge of illegal fireworks can result in a misdemeanor and up to $1000 in fines.

Illegal fireworks are those that leave the ground, explode or move on the ground uncontrollably.

Those include:

  • Mortars
  • M-80s
  • M-100s
  • Cherry Bombs
  • Firecrackers
  • Bottle Rockets

Fireworks should not be held in an individual's hand when lighting them. Water, sand or a garden hose should be readily available when discharging fireworks. Read the instructions on each piece of fireworks.

Wear cotton clothing. Avoid wearing nylon, loose clothing or fast burning materials.

Fireworks should be discharged in an open location free of overhead wires, trees or homes. Dry lawns or grass should be avoided.

Do not alter or modify fireworks. Use as directed.

Do not attempt to re-light fireworks that do not discharge. Do not approach a faulty firework for at least 30 minutes prior to lighting.

A spectator area should be designated 15 feet away from the discharge site of fireworks. Pets should be kept away from fireworks.

Fireworks should be disposed of in a container of water.

Burns from fireworks can worsen. Concerns should be brought up with a physician.
