Santa Barbara County reevaluating emergency alert notifications

The Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management is reassessing how it handles sending out emergency alert notifications.

Director Kelly Hubbard says they are moving away from the statewide Aware and Prepare alert system and instead sending out alerts through ReadySBC.org.

The reason, according to Hubbard, is to avoid any confusion with the statewide system.

People already registered with Aware and Prepare will receive alerts through ReadySBC and do not need to sign up again.

Hubbard says while they are making sure statewide guidelines are followed, they want to eliminate any "fatigue" with over messaging or confusion when multiple agencies are sending out messages on the same topic.

However, she adds that notifications for weather-related events where a threat to public safety is involved would still be sent out.

No final decisions have been made.
