Students in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District attended the first day of virtual learning on Thursday.

Teachers said the next two weeks will focus on student engagement and making sure everyone has the necessary resources to learn at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think the platform is very different, of course, but as teachers, that's what we love to do," said Miranda Dominguez, a second-grade teacher at Miller Elementary School in Santa Maria. "We love to have students engaged in our classroom and we love to have them engaged virtually, so I think once that starts is where our passion and excitement of being a teacher really come into play."

Teachers say communication with students and parents is crucial as the school year begins.

Full instruction will begin on August 31.
