The Santa Maria Riverbed is undergoing a native plant restoration project this week.

The Department of Recreation and Parks is working on clearing overgrown shrubbery and invasive plant species from about 150 acres of the city-owned property.

Department officials say they want to increase the enjoyment of the outdoors for everyone. They also want people to learn about the area through its new Ranch to River Nature Program.

The program will include free bus transportation for school field trips, weekend nature hikes and activities for visitors to learn about local wildlife environments.

California State Parks is funding the program.
