The City of Santa Maria is offering a new "Sports in a Bag" program for kids ages 4 and up.

The idea is to give kids a camp-like experience from home where parents and caregivers can help teach them the fundamentals of sports.

Sports in a Bag kits include essentials like a new ball, air pump, disc cones, deck cards, and more than 50 activity drills.

Each week, city staff will upload an instructional video demonstrating proper coaching techniques offered in the materials.

"A lot of the distance learning is going on at home. We want to give the opportunity to step outside for a while, recreate for at least 20-30 minutes on a daily basis, and we're hoping this will encourage parents down the road to visualize, to see what it takes to be a coach and maybe encourage them to become a coach," said Eduardo Marquez, City of Santa Maria Recreation Supervisor.

The kits are available for $40 each.
