The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the discovery of skimmer devices at a gas station in San Miguel.

Sheriff's officials say a clerk at the Chevron on K Street noticed suspicious activity on the station's video surveillance Tuesday and alerted authorities.

Deputies who responded reportedly found skimmer devices on six of the eight fuel pumps.

Such devices are used by criminals to secretly download the data off of a credit or debit card.

Sheriff's officials say the skimmer devices at the San Miguel Chevron were placed inside the fuel pumps so users wouldn't notice them. They say the skimmers were enabled with Bluetooth so the data could be transmitted to a laptop near the gas station.

Investigators are now trying to figure out who installed the skimmers.

Anyone who purchased gas at that station is urged to check their debit or credit card statements for suspicious activity. The sheriff's office also recommends paying for gas inside or avoiding the use of a debit card.
