The San Luis Obispo County Office of Emergency Services conducted a training drill at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo on Wednesday.
The exercise was aimed at practicing how to respond if an employee at Diablo Canyon Power Plant was injured and potentially contaminated with radiological material.
"So if someone was just contaminated at Diablo, they can handle that themselves, but if someone contaminated and injured themselves, they would have to come to the hospital and we need to be prepared to not only provide medical care but also provide the decontamination of that person if they are in fact contaminated," explained Rachel Dion, County of San Luis Obispo Office of Emergency Services Coordinator.
Dion says an accident like that is extremely rare, but in case it does happen, they need to be prepared.
The Office of Emergency Services holds these trainings every year and rotates with each hospital in the area.
After each exercise, participating agencies have a review to see if any of their practices can change or improve.
