This week is National Fire Prevention Week and SLO Farmers’ Market is celebrating by raising awareness throughout the community.

The theme at Thursday night’s event is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.” It is meant to encourage people to ready themselves if a devastating wildfire breaks out in their area.

The evening event will feature firefighters from the San Luis Obispo County region showing visitors the new fire equipment they use for safety. There will be interactive booths and displays to highlight some of the features of the equipment and how crews use them in dangerous emergency situations.

"The City of SLO Fire Department takes pride in educating our residents on how they can participate in fire prevention and we're excited to bring a fun set up to Farmers' Market this year,” said Joey Nau, Fire Prevention Admin for the City of San Luis Obispo.

The SLO Farmers’ Market will also host musical group Painted Red, which consists of all retired firefighters. They will be performing as visitors enjoy the booths and vendors set up in downtown San Luis Obispo selling food, drinks and locally made products.

Fire Prevention Week takes place nationwide from October 7-11. It was established in 1925, making it the longest running public health observance in the U.S.

Farmers’ Market is held every Thursday on Higuera Street in downtown San Luis Obispo from 6-9 p.m.
