Some of the best male gymnasts in the state showed off their skills and routines for gold, silver and bronze medals in San Luis Obispo this weekend.

The Central Coast Gymnastics Sports Center (CCG) in San Luis Obispo held an invitational Sunday for amateur and Junior Olympic-level male gymnasts.

35 male gymnasts from all over California, 18-years-old and younger, came to the Central Coast to compete in the invitational.

CCG welcomed the following teams this weekend:

  • CCG (SLO)
  • Clovis Academy of Gymnastics (Clovis)
  • Excel Gymnastics (Clovis)
  • Gold Star Gymnastics (Sunnyvale)
  • WCOGA (Pleasanton)
  • Stanford Boys Gymnastics (Palo Alto)
  • Gymnastics Beat (Fresno)

There's an Xcel level for recreational athletes, as well as a Junior Olympic level for professional or competitive athletes in USA Gymnastics.

The owner of Central Coast Gymnastics said the Xcel level is geared toward boys who may be late to the gymnastics game whereas the Junior Olympic level is for boys who have been in the sport since they were young.

"They're definitely focused on how exciting the Olympics are and they get excited about college gymnastics as well, so you see these young boys training because they want to compete throughout high school and into college and then, you know, maybe someday in the Olympics," said Mimi Phene-McKellar, owner of Central Coast Gymnastics.

The gymnasts who score highly in today's invitational will move on to the state championships.
