This New Year's, authorities are reminding people that fireworks are illegal.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says even though the Central Coast received rain earlier this week, most fireworks are extremely hot and can spark fires or cause injuries when detonation occurs unexpectedly.

Throughout most parts of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, the manufacturing, possession, storage, sale, use, and handling of fireworks is prohibited.

Those found in violation can face fines ranging between $500 and $1,000 and jail time.

Some local cities allow the use of safe and sane fireworks on the Fourth of July.
