Weather balloon launch gives local students lesson in meteorology

KSBY Chief Meteorologist Dave Hovde and PG&E Meteorologist John Lindsey launched a weather balloon Tuesday with help from the students at Del Mar Elementary School in Morro Bay.

They also spoke to the students about the layers of the atmosphere, how they interact, and how that impacts weather.

They explained the science behind why the balloon floats and how far it's expected to travel. It could float for hundreds of miles before popping.

Inside the balloon, they left a message explaining where it came from in case someone finds it.
