Cal Poly athletic director Don Oberhelman held a press conference Sunday night at Mott Athletics Center to discuss the firing of head men’s basketball coach, Joe Callero.

On Wednesday, Oberhelman announced that Callero would not be retained once the season came to an end. Callero was hired by Cal Poly in 2009, leading the Mustangs to one Big West Conference Tournament title, and one to trip to the NCAA Tournament, both coming in 2014.

“We need to be in the hunt for titles,” Oberhelman said. “I’m not saying  we need to win a Big West title, but I want to get us back into the hunt, and this was one more year where we weren’t.”

Callero spent 10 seasons as Cal Poly head coach, going 126-184 over that period.
