NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — It’s Election Day in Nashville, Mayor David Briley faces multiple challengers.
Briley is running for re-election for the first time in the city where Democratic voters dominate. He faces Democratic state Rep. John Ray Clemmons, Republican conservative commentator Carol Swain and Metro Councilman John Cooper, the brother of Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper.
If no candidate receives more than half of Thursday’s vote, the two top vote-getters will head to a Sept. 12 runoff.
The contest is nonpartisan. Briley, a Democrat, began serving as mayor in March 2018 after former Mayor Megan Barry pleaded guilty to a felony and resigned over an extramarital affair with her bodyguard. He won a special election in May 2018 to serve the rest of Barry’s term.
