On Tuesday, Arroyo Grande city leaders are set to decide whether to approve a new grant for the Arroyo Grande Police Department.
The $70,600 grant is coming from the California Office of Traffic Safety. If approved, it will be used to help fund training, more equipment, and overtime staffing related to distracted driving and driving under the influence.
Arroyo Grande Police Chief Dave Culver said this will help bring officers in on their days off to do additional enforcement.
"When we do the distracted driving enforcement, we do our DUI checkpoints, we do the pedestrian enforcement activities, and we also go out and do the community education aspect; all of the time that the officers are doing that, that's being reimbursed through the grant,” Chief Culver said.
Culver said to get the grant, a number of things are evaluated, like the number of collisions, arrests, and population numbers within the city.
The amount is largely tied to how many DUI enforcement checkpoints the department commits to doing. Culver said typically they’ll have six to eight checkpoints a year.
