The American Red Cross of Pacific Coast is making sure people in Lompoc have smoke alarms.

They’re hosting a Sound the Alarm fire safety and smoke installation event Suaturday from 8:30 a.m to 5 p.m.

The Red Cross will be going to homes throughout the city to install smoke alarms and help families create escape plans. The service is free.

“Every home needs working smoke alarms, because these devices can cut the risk of death in a home fire by half,” Interim Executive Director Joe De La Cerda said. “That’s why the Red Cross launched the Home Fire Campaign to help prevent needless tragedies. It’s important for our neighbors to know we will be in the area because it could save a life.”

The American Red Cross said they have reached more than 1.7 million people and saved more than 500 lives throughout the country since launching the campaign in 2014.
