Police in Grover Beach are rewarding children for doing the right thing.

The department is teaming up with 7-Eleven for Operation Chill.

It allows officers to hand out free 12 oz. Slurpee “tickets” to children seen being safe, doing good deeds or showing positive behavior.

Monday afternoon, officers handed out a few of the tickets to deserving children.

"The connection between law enforcement and our youth is really important, so this kind of outreach allows our officers to have this really great method through a Slurpee to connect one-on-one with our kids and say, ‘Hey, we're here for you and it’s not always about arresting someone. Sometimes it’s just recognizing when you do something good,” said Commander Brian Millard.

Operation Chill is designed to “reduce crime and enhance relations between police and youth.”

The program has been around for 25 years and more than 22 million coupons have been distributed through more than 1,100 law enforcement agencies across the United States and Canada.
