Local pet groomers are now being impacted by COVID-19, but they are hoping lawmakers will recognize their industry as essential.

As of yesterday, pet shops and groomers were ordered to stop any grooming services.

Judy Enger, who owns 'Hair of the Dog' in Paso Robles, said her industry does a lot more than just cosmetic work.

She said groomers can detect basic needs and problems before they become emergencies, such as eye, ear and skin infections.

"If we can't take care of these little guys, who will take care of them? They rely on us to take care of all of their needs. I relate them to a toddler and many times, for a lot of people, they are their only companion," Enger said.

Enger said groomers can operate while still practicing social distancing and hoped that groomers are taken off the non-essential list of businesses.
