The Cal Poly Pier is closed to the public with the exception of two days a year. This Saturday, May 6th, Cal Poly is hosting an open house on the pier.
Researchers and students will be there to demonstrate projects that they are working on. There will be hands-on activities, as well as photography opportunities from the private pier in Avila.
The Cal Poly Pier was donated to the school in 2002 by Unocal, which is now Chevron. Today it is Cal Poly’s marine lab station in Avila Beach. The pier looks empty from the shore, but there are as many as 2,000 students and researchers there throughout the year.
"These are projects happening right here on our Central Coast involving local rock fish populations, involving the effects of solar UVs on marine mammals. Any number of projects, but they’re right here local for people to come see," said Cal Poly Marine Operations Manager Tom Moylan, who advises the public to bring walking shoes. The pier is 3,000 feet long.
Parking is available on the shoulder of Avila Beach Drive, or you can park at Avila Beach and walk.
The open house is 9 a.m. until noon Saturday.
