The isthmus area of Santa Cruz Island is back open to the public after firefighters gained more ground over the weekend on a fire that broke out there last week.

Containment of the Santa Cruz Island Fire is now at 70 percent, according to Channel Islands National Park.

The fire broke out March 27 and has reportedly burned about 250 acres and destroyed one small non-historic outbuilding.

Officials say the fire escaped from a prescribed pile burn that had been set earlier that week and spread to nearby brush. The fire was said to be burning mostly in tall grass and chaparral.

About 26 fire personnel remain on scene to put out any hot spots that remain.

Santa Cruz Island is the largest of the eight California Channel Islands.
