Four presumed dead in California military helicopter crash

Posted

A Marine helicopter crashed Tuesday in Southern California and authorities believe all four crew members were killed.

The military says the CH-53E Super Stallion went down shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday near El Centro and just north of Plaster City.

The helicopter was with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Authorities say it happened during a routine training mission.

"Throughout our history, there have been mishaps around here," said Naval Air Facility El Centro Public Affairs Officer Kristopher Haugh. "In 2014, we had a Harrier crash over in the City of Imperial and there have been others throughout the bases’ history."

The military says the names of the deceased will be withheld until next of kin is notified.
