Isla Vista beaches to be closed due to potential ‘Floatopia’ event

The beaches in Isla Vista will be closed this weekend.

Santa Barbara County officials say they are closing the beaches from April 7-8 because of the potential for a so-called "Floatopia" event.

In 2009, thousands of people flooded the beaches there for a Floatopia party and left the area strewn with trash, debris and human waste.

Since then, the county has closed the beaches when there is word of such an event, and the unsanctioned party has moved to the streets of Isla Vista.

Known as Deltopia, the party typically attracts thousands of college-aged people to the area. The neighboring city of Goleta has parking restrictions in place from April 6-8 to try to ease the impact of the event on Goleta residents.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff will enforce the beach closure.
