The 5th annual Day of Hope raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Mission Hope Cancer Center on Wednesday.

Early in the morning, volunteers in Santa Maria, Lompoc, Santa Ynez, and Nipomo loaded up bundles of 12,000 special edition newspapers and fanned out across the area, selling them for at least $1 each.

Every dollar goes to the cancer center.

"It’s events like this that help replenish our coffers every year so that we’re able to give money to patients, whether it be for gas cards, electric bills," said Dr. Monica Rocco of the Mission Hope Cancer Center.

Through newspaper sales and other donations, the goal was to raise $190,000.
