Atascadero Veteran receives donated car

A Vietnam-era Air Force veteran who recently moved to Atascadero was given a well deserved gift Saturday afternoon.

John Stevens was handed the keys to a practically brand new Toyota Prius as a thank you for his service to our country.

Stevens moved to the Central Coast last fall to be closer to family but struggled to find housing and a job, making money tight.  Up until Saturday, Stevens relied on a neighbor for rides to his part time job and was unable to look for full-time work in neighboring towns due to lack of reliable transportation.

The car was donated from Caliber Collision and Allstate through a partnership with the National Auto Body Council’s Recycled Rides program. The program repairs and donates cars to help individuals and families rebuild their lives.

Associates at Caliber Collision-Atascadero volunteered personal time to restore the 2014 Prius.  Local businesses contributed parts, materials, services for the vehicle, as well as gifts and certificates for Stevens.

Stevens was nominated for the Recycled rides program by the Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo.
