Hundreds of locals turned out for an extra-colorful 5k race Sunday.

Runners took off for the 5th annual Color Blast Fun Run Sunday morning from San Luis Obispo High School, in honor of Alex Maier.

Maier was a student and star soccer player at SLO High. He was killed in a car crash January 2013.

Maier’s family started the Color Blast Fun Run as a tribute to him. The race is now run by the Black & Gold Booster club at the school.

About 750 people ran or walked the race course, along with many four-legged friends.

As participants crossed the finish line, everyone was covered in colorful dust made from corn starch.

The money raised at Sunday’s event will go toward the Alex Maier Memorial Scholarship Fund and various booster projects at SLO High School.
