Caltrans held its 27th annual Worker Memorial Ceremony Thursday morning at the District 5 headquarters in San Luis Obispo.

The event paid tribute to the 188 Caltrans workers who have lost their lives on California roadways since 1921. That includes 8 local worker deaths in the Central Coast division.

"So we are asking the public to don’t drive distracted, don’t drive impaired, be aware of our surroundings and when you see Caltrans workers out there, please drive slower and safer," said Caltrans District 5 Director Richard Rosales.

This year’s keynote speaker was Santa Barbara County Director of Emergency Management Rob Lewin. The event included paying respects to the fallen at a monument in the headquarter’s garden.
