The nursing field grew a little bigger Friday afternoon when more than 40 students received their pins from Cuesta College on their way to becoming a registered nurse.

This is the 50th class of registered nursing graduates in Cuesta’s history.

The nursing program will celebrate the first group of 18 students who also earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the same time in an event on Saturday.

Students were able to complete their four-year degrees locally for the first time.

"It’s just beneficial because we get to stay in San Luis Obispo and not have to travel to Monterey Bay and we can just work on our bachelor’s," said Carlee Drew, a nursing graduate.

Officials with Cuesta College say 2017 was the fourth year in a row when all nursing graduates passed their licensing exams, which happens to be higher than the state average.
