California State Parks is looking at changes to the Oceano Dunes that could involve a full redesign.

The parks department held a meeting Tuesday night in Arroyo Grande to talk about the Public Works Plan for Pismo State Beach and the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. Dozens of residents packed in.

Some of the changes officials may be considering include moving the SVRA campground and adding a new vehicle entrance to the dunes.

"Using Pier Avenue as an entrance to the dunes holds our community hostage. Keep the off-road vehicle activity in the dunes if you wish but please spare our town of Oceano from being the gateway to this new plan," one attendee said.

"I think a southern entrance is a win-win. If you close Pier Avenue, Oceano is going to be 10 times worse," said another.

The process is meant to bring the park into compliance with environmental laws.

The next meeting for public input is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Radisson Hotel Fresno Conference Center in Fresno.
