Buena Vista Park in Santa Maria is set to be opened in early August.

The city’s oldest park has been undergoing major renovations since early 2017.

Once complete, it will include a new playground, renovated restrooms, more grass for games, basketball hoops, tetherball courts, new sidewalks, and a bandstand. City officials hope the park will be a place the community can utilize for farmers markets, family picnics, community concerts, and summer festivals.

"This was a major milestone for us to get the project done," said Alex Posada, Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Director. "It actually started in development about seven years ago and we were hoping to move forward a little quicker but we were able to get our community input and then took off on a new design and came up with what you are seeing today."

The design pays tribute to the park’s 100-year history, with tile murals at the park’s entrance at Morrison Ave. and Pine St. that illustrate its beginnings.
