Memorial Day events on the Central Coast

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of summer. Many will celebrate the day off with a backyard barbecue. However, we shouldn’t forget what the day is actually about.

There are plenty of ways to pay respect to our fallen service men and women on Memorial Day this Monday.

SUNDAY

Grover Beach

4th annual Memorial Day Cruise: Begins in the parking lot at Fin’s Restaurant located at 25 W. Grand Avenue in Grover Beach at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to fly American flags as they drive along Highway 1 to Port San Luis and back to the beach in Oceano. Click here for more information.

MONDAY

Santa Ynez Valley

Solvang Park Flag Pole Memorial Day Ceremony: The program will start at noon at the flag pole in Solvang Park which bears a plaque honoring 18 Santa Ynez Valley veterans who died from WWI through Afghanistan. The ceremony will include a flyover of vintage military aircraft, music and speeches by veterans. Click here for more information

Pismo Beach

Pismo Pier Annual Memorial Day Ceremony: Dozens are expected to attend the event which at 11 a.m. Speakers and music will pay tribute to those lost in battle. 

Avila Beach

Unfinished Business Memorial Day Jam: This benefit concert will raise money for disabled veterans at the Avila Beach Golf Resort from 12:30-5 p.m. Click here for ticket information and details.

San Luis Obispo

San Luis Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony: Members of the American Legion will host a ceremony at the cemetery starting at 11 a.m. by the mausoleum. At about 11:25 a.m. a B-25 and other support aircraft from the Estrella Warbirds will fly over the ceremony.

Los Osos

Memorial Day Program at Los Osos Valley Mortuary & Memorial Park: The program will begin with live music at 10:30 a.m. followed by a ceremony at 11 a.m. Con. Chuck Clark will speak. The Estrella Warbirds will fly over the ceremony. Kiwanis will serve a tri-tip lunch afterward and appreciate donations.

Cayucos

Lost at Sea Ceremony: The ceremony will start at 3 p.m. at the base of the pier, followed by a procession to the end of the pier to commit a wreath to honor those lost at sea. Click here for details. 

Cambria

Memorial Day Ceremony: The event will begin at the flagpole outside the Veterans Memorial Building on Main St. starting at 11 a.m. A barbecue lunch will be served after the ceremony. A $5 donation is appreciated.

Paso Robles

Vino for Vets: Saturday through Monday, numerous wineries will donate a portion of all wine sales to Honor Flight Central Coast, a group that sends vets on trips to D.C. to visit the memorials built in their honor. Click here for the full list of participating wineries

Atascadero

Pine Mountain Cemetery Ceremony: Local veterans and residents are invited to a ceremony at the cemetery at 11 a.m.

Faces of Freedom Memorial Day Ceremony and Celebration: About 1,000 people are expected to come out for a tribute with music and speakers starting at 12 p.m. at the memorial in Atascadero Lake Park. A barbecue lunch will follow the ceremony. Click here for details.

Santa Margarita

Santa Margarita Cemetery Memorial Day Service: Margarita Boy Scouts Troop 123 will start the program at 10:30 a.m. The Irish Hills Bagpiper Ensemble will perform. The Estrella Warbirds will do a flyover at about 11 a.m.
