The Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Richard Rundhaug as the interim principal for San Marcos High School for the 2018-19 school year.

The vote was 4-1 at the the meeting that took place on May, 22.

In addition to his role as a K-12 educator, Dr. Rundhaug has taught graduate level courses in education, educational law, school finance, and statistics.

On Wednesday, May 23 the former San Marcos High School Principal Ed Behrens filed a lawsuit against the Santa Barbara Unified School District, alleging a violation of his constitutional rights and unlawful retaliation.

The lawsuit stems from his demotion following a January incident at San Marcos High School in which a threat was made toward female students online.

The district will initiate a search for a permanent principal for SMHS in February 2019.
