The Cal Poly Sailing Team qualified for nationals for the first time in history this week.
The sailors are on a club team, which makes the qualification a big step for participants because a club team does not get very much – if any – funding from the university.
In order to qualify, senior captain Grace Carrick had to beat the University of Hawaii in the final race at their own event.
"I knew it was insanely close and then I was sailing in and I see my teammates and they were all jumping up and down," Carrick said. "Allison was crying her eyes out. And I was like, ‘oh my god we did it!’ It was amazing."
Nationals take place next week in Virginia.
