A local murder trial is now in the hands of a jury.

Charles Giese is accused of murdering his roommate, 54-year-old Walter Vallivero, in a San Luis Obispo mobile home in November 2015.

Jurors began deliberating Monday and will continue deliberations Tuesday, according to the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office.

During Giese’s preliminary hearing in October 2016, Giese’s mom, Brenda Caves, testified that her son told her he and Vallivero had gotten into a fight, during which he hit Vallivero with a baseball bat.

Giese didn’t know if Vallivero was still alive, Caves said. She called 911.

The jury will decide whether Giese acted in self-defense.
