Volunteers needed to help feed kids in Santa Barbara County

The Santa Barbara County Foodbank is asking for the community’s help to feed kids and local families this summer.

More than 500 free lunches were given out Monday in Santa Maria alone.

Foodbank officials say many families get help from the Picnic in the Park summer lunch program.

"We want to make sure that those kids aren’t going without during the summertime – that they have healthy nutritious food that they need to help them grow to help them be ready to get back into school in the fall and learn," said Santa Barbara County Foodbank representative Laurel Alcantar.

The Foodbank needs about 300 volunteers to make the summer lunch program a success.

Volunteers are asked to help out one day a week in Santa Barbara, Isla Vista, Lompoc, Santa Maria, or Guadalupe.
