Local youth bands liven up free summer meal programs

Posted

On Thursday, June 21, Monroe Elementary School in Santa Barbara will be holding a Free Summer Meal Concert as part of an ongoing series.

The series includes eight different concerts this summer where local DJs and youth musicians will be performing. The Santa Barbara Unified School District is partnering with the Santa Barbara Unified School District, the City of Santa Barbara, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County and the Community Action Commission to increase participation at 50 places where children can drop in to enjoy a meal.

The summer concert series was inspired by actor and Santa Barbara local Jeff Bridges. Since its debut, program participation has increased over 30 percent. Still, Santa Barbara County continues to find many children who rely on free meals during the school year going without during the summer.

"Summer is the hardest time for kids in need, when school is out, and their main source of meals is gone," Bridges said. "Community organizations have joined forces to make sure the children of Santa Barbara County have the nutritious food they need."

Families in the county can easily find the locations where summer meals are served by texting SUMMERFOOD to 877-877.

Thursday’s concert will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
