A San Luis Obispo Blues pitcher underwent emergency surgery after being hit in the face by a line drive during Monday night’s game against the Santa Barbara Foresters.

One of the team’s assistant coaches tells KSBY that Ben Kirke is OK and in good spirits following neurological surgery Monday night, adding that the pitcher is expected to be out of the hospital in four to five days.

The injury happened during the first inning of the game, which was played at Sinsheimer Stadium.

According to the 2018 Blues roster, Kirke, 19, is from Scottsdale, Ariz. and is a sophomore at Grand Canyon University.

The SLO Blues play every year from the end of May through August.
