Downtown San Luis Obispo business owners, managers and employees had the chance to attend a free informational seminar on crime prevention Wednesday.

The event, hosted at SLO HotHouse, was presented by Downtown SLO, the San Luis Obispo Police Department and ULZI.

The seminar covered employee safety basics, theft prevention and anti-fraud concepts.

San Luis Obispo police officers gave tips on keeping a well-maintained storefront that would keep crime away and how to approach shoplifters.

"I think it’s really important. I know with my employees, we want to give them tools with how to deal with certain situations cause there’s all kinds of things that happen downtown, not just shoplifting and thefts," said Jules Durocher, a downtown shop owner.

Attendees learned how to develop a safety plan for their businesses, ways employees can protect themselves, and concepts on how to reduce fraud.

They also learned how to use the ULZI app, a GPS phone tracking application that creates safe routes when walking home alone and sends emergency alerts to first responders if you get in trouble.
