Tears were shed earlier this week when a couple was married before the groom’s ill mother at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, all to make sure his mother would be there to witness it.

According to the hospital staff, the couple – Les and Tamara – first met in Illinois when they were junior high students at the same school. They went their separate ways after high school, only to reunite 38 years later.

They were planning their wedding in Florida, but Les’s mother, who is a San Luis Obispo County resident, became ill and was worried she would miss her own son’s wedding because of the inability to travel. That’s when the two decided to get hitched at her bedside while in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"I’m so grateful for the kindness the nursing staff showed to us during this special moment with our family," Tamara said.

"It isn’t often we have a wedding in the hospital," says Flora Washburn, Manager of Spiritual Care. "It was inspiring to see the staff come together to make this beautiful moment a possibility for our patient and her family."
