Santa Maria police say they took a 31-year-old woman into custody Friday afternoon after she threatened to harm herself and officers.

Officers were reportedly called to Atkinson Park in the 1000 block of N. Railroad at approximately 2:15 p.m. for a report of a woman threatening to harm herself with a knife.

Police say when officers confronted her and urged her to drop the knife, she raised it toward them in a threatening manner. One of the officers reportedly fired at the woman with his "less-lethal impact weapon," and after two shots striking her in the chest, she dropped the weapon but still had control over the knife and refused to surrender.

Police say it took 30 minutes for the officers to convince the woman to surrender peacefully.

She was reportedly taken to the mental health unit at Marian Regional Medical Center. It’s expected she will be charged with a weapon violation.
