The Good Samaritan Shelter teamed up with local boy scouts to raise money for a new barbecue.

Troop 95 Orcutt boy scout Alex Andrade, a Righetti High School freshman, is in the midst of his Eagle Scout project. The young man is working to raise around $5,000 for the Santa Maria shelter.

Andrade set up a GoFundMe page to help get to the goal.

"My family and I have enjoyed barbecue at home and it’s always a great family time,” Andrade said. "I want to create the same experience for the less-fortunate.”

The new addition will help the shelter and volunteers prepare around 3,000 meals a week.

Supervisors and community members at the Good Samaritan are very excited for the sense of community it will bring to the shelter.

With placement plans already decided, construction for the new barbecue will start as soon as the tax-deductible funds are raised.
